The wall, built at this stage to protect the northern border, ran from Lintao in the west to [M 004 / Liaoning] in the east for over 3,100 miles. Various walls built by earlier [G 17 / principalities] were taken down to prevent separate states emerging once again. This wall came to be called the [P 004 / Wan Li Chang Cheng] or the `10,000-li-long wall.' Some of the earlier walls were incorporated into this wall and the legend of the [N 001 / Great Wall of China was born]. Hundreds of thousands of [I 006 / workers] - soldiers, convicts and peasants - are said to have worked on the [M 002 / Qin wall]. Beyond this, however, there is very little agreement on the exact details of the Qin, their deeds or their wall.
The Qin wall was built and rebuilt for centuries afterwards. Dynasties that followed Qin also built bits of the wall. These included the Western Han, Eastern Han, Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, Northern Qi, Northern Zhou, Sui, Liao, Jin and Ming. The largest and most impressive sections were built by the [M 010/ Han] and the [P 010/ Ming]. Although the Tang, Yuan and Qing Dynasties did none of their own building, they did repair the wall and make use of it. This has to led to the contention in opinion that the Chinese spent over 2, 000 years building the wall.
